Christmas Communion 2024

Last weekend, winds of at least 225 km/h from Cyclone devastated the isolated French overseas département of Mayotte, leaving an estimated 100,000 people without shelter or water and hundreds, possibly thousands, dead. Mayotte is small, 374 km2 which is less than 20km x 20km, and home to about 320,000 residents.

Mayotte is where my friend Galeb and his family and his sister Widaad, who came to PCC while she was here in New Zealand for a few months in 2014. The good news is they’re all ok and their homes. The bad news is that with a 1/3 of the island now homeless and basic utilities badly damaged, it’s going to be a while before life returns to normal.

Mayotte is the poorest of all the French départements, a far cry from the splendour of the Palace in Paris where the President of France lives. To his credit, President Emmanuel Macron made a visit to Mayotte this week and vowed to help with the rebuild. But he blew it when during his visit, Macron swore at the residents of Mayotte on Thursday night, telling a jeering crowd “If it wasn’t for France, you’d be 10,000 times deeper in s**t.”

Emmanuel means God with us. The true Emmanuel is Jesus not the one at the Palace de l’Élysée. Jesus left his throne in Heaven to come down to the Earth, not for a fleeting 2 day visit to tell us we’re nobodies without him but to be born in poverty and live his life amongst ordinary folk, not expecting any special privileges for the King he is. And eventually to give his life for all of us, so that we might find forgiveness for our sins and gain citizenship to live with him in Heaven.

There is so much to reflect on in the Christmas story.

Why the little town of Bethlehem and not the capital Jerusalem? Because that was the royal city where King David was born. The Kingdom of God is like a mustard seed. Great things come from small beginnings.

Why the shepherds? Because Israel was being led by bad shepherds, the Good Shepherd came to the good shepherds doing their job out in the fields.

Why the swaddling clothes? To show he was one of us, just like all the other babies, wrapped in swaddling clothes to stop him moving about. He is Emmanuel, God with us.

Why the manger? Because there was no room at the inn. So many people don’t have room for Jesus. To show he was ready to go lower than us, to eat with us, to commune with us. He is the Servant King, telling us to take his yoke upon us because he is gentle and lowly of heart.

Jesus says to each one us today;

Revelation 3:20

Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.

Christianity Explained - Study 6 - Believing

Print Friendly and PDF

We have now reached our final study in the Christianity Explained series.

Christianity Explained is designed for the person who knows nothing about Jesus or his Gospel.

Papatoetoe has an estimated 2.8% of its population in Church on a Sunday. Could you or I explain to the nearly 98% non-Christians in Papatoetoe (that’s 49 out of 50 people you see in the street) the Gospel of Jesus Christ in a way that helped them to believe that Jesus is the Son of God and gave them reason to change what they do on a Sunday morning? After today, you are equipped for the task.

We established the 3 essential foundations to being a true Christian.

The belief that Jesus is the Son of God with all authority including final judgment over us, that his death on the Cross was the only way to forgive our sins and that after 3 days he rose back life, proving he really is the Son of God with even authority even over death itself. Christianity answers the most important question that we can ever ask. What must I do to be saved which is answered by;

Romans 10:9

that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

But as we saw in our last study, repentance was a theme of Jesus’s preaching along with the necessity to believe.

Mark 1:14-15

Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”

He told the multitudes that unless they repented, they would all perish.

He likened them to an unfruitful fig tree, saying that unless they would start bearing fruit, they would be cut down.

The fruit of repentance shows that we have truly believed.

A biblical definition of repentance involves 4 things. To make a change of mind, heart, and action, by turning away from sin and self and returning to God.

We saw that repentance was a theme of each Gospel, emphasised in different ways.

Now we come to the second part of being a true Christian - believing. The question is « What is true belief? »

A lot of people think of believing is a kind of mental assent. They think that accepting something to be a fact is what belief is. Even the dictionary definition says the same thing. But that is not the full meaning of biblical belief.

Jean Francois Gravelot aka the Great Blondin was a famous tightrope walker. In the summer of 1859, he walked 1,100 feet across (335m), 160 feet above (49m) the falls several times back and forth between Canada and the United States as huge crowds on both sides looked on with shock and awe. Once he crossed in a sack, once on stilts, another time on a bicycle, and once he even carried a stove and cooked an omelet!

On July 15, Blondin walked backward across the tightrope to Canada and returned pushing a wheelbarrow.

The story is told that it was after pushing a wheelbarrow across while blindfolded that Blondin asked for some audience participation. It is said that he asked his audience, "Do you believe I can carry a person across in this wheelbarrow?"  The crowd shouted that yes, they believed! It was then that Blondin posed the question - "Who will get in the wheelbarrow?'

Of course...none did.

Just like repentance, biblical belief is an action word. If I truly believe something to be true, then I will live my life accordingly. Following on from the chapter on Faith in Hebrews 11, Paul opens the next chapter with;

Hebrews 12:1-2

Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

If I really believe then I will run the race with endurance and not give up.

True faith is foolishness to the World. Not everyone admired Blondin’s feat. The New York Times condemned “such reckless and aimless exposure of life” and the “thoughtless people” who enjoyed “looking at a fellow creature in deadly peril.” Mark Twain later dismissed Blondin as “that adventurous ass.”

The World says “seeing is believing”. The Christian says “believing is seeing”. The World cannot understand when someone gives up a successful life in Worldly terms, money, possessions, power and leaves it all behind to follow Christ.

But as we heard last week, Jim Elliot, the American missionary killed by tribesmen in South America said of his mission;

"He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose".

What are these things we cannot lose that Jim Elliot is referring to? God promises at least 3 gifts to those who repent and believe.

1. The Holy Spirit

Mark 1:8

I indeed baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

We discussed last week the illustration of a house. When we become a Christian, the Holy Spirit moves in. That is what we called « moving day ». Then the Holy Spirit begins the ongoing  renovations of the different rooms in our house. These renovations continue for the rest of our lives on Earth.

2. Forgiveness of Sins

Mark 2:10-11

But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins”—He said to the paralytic, “I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.”

The forgiveness of all our sins is such an important thing and only Jesus can give it through his death on the Cross. Many will not suffer your sins at all. People go to Psychiatrists and therapists because they have guilt from their sins or unforgiveness issues. Jesus said unless we forgive others, we can’t be forgiven. Some of us last week said that trauma in our lives is a room that we keep locked and don’t want any guest to go into. Only forgiveness can open the door to such a room.

3. Eternal Life

Mark 10:29-30

So Jesus answered and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My sake and the gospel’s, who shall not receive a hundredfold now in this time—houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions—and in the age to come, eternal life.

Becoming a Christian will often separate us from our old life completely. We can no longer go to places or look at things that were once appealing. Some family and friends will no longer want to associate with us and we may experience persecution for our faith. Real Christians experience the kind of trouble and persecution that goes with eternal life. But Jesus promises the newness of eternal life in exchange for our old life.

Leaving our old life takes faith,  real belief. There will be a genuine significant change from our life before we were a Christian. This is what separates the true believers from the make believers.

Genuine faith trusts the Lord when scientific facts and our feelings might be telling us otherwise. Jairus’s 12 year old daughter was dying when he went to see Jesus.

Faith is

1. Taking Jesus at his word

Mark 5:35-36

While He was still speaking, some came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not be afraid; only believe.

How would Jairus have felt when the message came that his daughter was dead? Faith required him to trust in Jesus’ word despite all the evidence to the contrary. Faith is based, not on how we feel, but on the facts of what Jesus says “Do not be afraid; only believe.”

I wish we didn’t have to face such moments in our lives but when we do, we can put our faith in Jesus, not the circumstance in front of us even if our faith is a small as a mustard seed. It’s not the size of our faith that is important, it is the size of the One we are putting our faith in. Nothing is too big for Jesus.

Faith is

2. Reaching out to Jesus

On the way to Jairus’s house a woman who’d been sick for 12 years reached out and touched Jesus’s garment, reasoning if only she could touch his clothes, she would be healed, and sure enough, she was.

Mark 5:34

And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.”

Jesus made her faith public when she would probably have preferred to keep it quiet. Real faith is made public.

Faith is

3. Trusting in the face of opposition

Mark 5:38-43

Then He came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and saw a tumult and those who wept and wailed loudly. When He came in, He said to them, “Why make this commotion and weep? The child is not dead, but sleeping.” And they ridiculed Him

Real belief often has to overcome the scepticism of those without faith, the vast majority including family and friends.

But when He had put them all outside, He took the father and the mother of the child, and those who were with Him, and entered where the child was lying. Then He took the child by the hand, and said to her, “Talitha, cumi,” which is translated, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” Immediately the girl arose and walked, for she was twelve years of age. And they were overcome with great amazement. But He commanded them strictly that no one should know it, and said that something should be given her to eat.

Faith is;

4. Having childlike trust

Often we have to put aside adult reasoning and just trust in the way a child trusts their parents. As soon as a child looks into their parents eyes, they feel no fear.

Mark 10:13-16

Then they brought little children to Him, that He might touch them; but the disciples rebuked those who brought them. But when Jesus saw it, He was greatly displeased and said to them, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God. Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.” And He took them up in His arms, laid His hands on them, and blessed them.

Taking that first step to follow Jesus takes courage for many people. A person can only do so if they are convinced that

1. Jesus is the Son of God with all authority including final judgment over us.

2. Jesus’s death on the Cross was the only way to forgive our sins and

3. After 3 days Jesus rose back life, proving he really is the Son of God with even authority even over death itself.

Believing is;

1. Taking Jesus at his Word

2. Reaching out to Jesus

3. Trusting in the face of opposition

4. Having childlike trust

In spite of our fears, the apparent facts and our feelings

Is that you today?

Christianity Explained - Study 5 - Repentance

Christianity Explained is designed for the person who knows nothing about Jesus or his Gospel.

Papatoetoe has an estimated 2.8% of its population in Church on a Sunday. Could you or I explain to the nearly 98% non-Christians in Papatoetoe (that’s 49 out of 50 people you see in the street) the Gospel of Jesus Christ in a way that helped them to believe that Jesus is the Son of God and gave them reason to change what they do on a Sunday morning? This course will equip you for the task.

So far we have established the 3 essential foundations to being a true Christian.

The belief that Jesus is the Son of God with all authority including final judgment over us, that his death on the Cross was the only way to forgive our sins and that after 3 days he rose back life, proving he really is the Son of God with even authority even over death itself. These are the 3 foundations to the well known scripture

Romans 10:9

that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

Christianity answers the most important question that we can ever ask. What must I do to be saved?

For the 4th study on Grace over Works, we had RC Sproul explain what was the key change in doctrine that came out of the Reformation of the 1500’s.

Last week we looked at the timeline of the Reformation and saw how God moves in history, often in spite of man’s bungling intervention that potentially ruins the work of God.

On 31st October 1517, Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the door of the All Saints Church in Wittenberg counteracting false doctrine that had crept into the Catholic Church primarily;

Before: Faith + Works = Justification

this means you can only be declared justified if you have done good works, no good for the thief on the cross if it were true but Jesus had already turned that thinking upside down.

After: Faith = Justification + Works

In other words, the emphasis is on faith for salvation and the works follow after having been justified or saved.

This change in doctrine was so explosive that as we learned last week, it led to an 18 year discussion at the Council of Trent and split the church between Catholic and Protestant.

Eventually leading to Guy Fawkes and his Catholic plotters attempting to assassinate the King and blow up the Houses of Parliament and take back England for the Pope.

This week we are going to follow on from our last study on salvation is by faith alone.

Today our study is on repentance - the true sign of salvation. A lot of modern day preaching neglects the use of this word which is seen as old fashioned. But first, we’ll read a passage on repentance found in Luke;

Luke 13:1-5

There were present at that season some who told Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. And Jesus answered and said to them, “Do you suppose that these Galileans were worse sinners than all other Galileans, because they suffered such things? I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish. Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them, do you think that they were worse sinners than all other men who dwelt in Jerusalem? I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.”

Repentance is so important that Jesus said it twice within a few seconds.

Following on immediately, Jesus said;

Luke 13:6-9

He also spoke this parable: “A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none. Then he said to the keeper of his vineyard, ‘Look, for three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree and find none. Cut it down; why does it use up the ground?’ But he answered and said to him, ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and fertilize it. And if it bears fruit, well. But if not, after that you can cut it down.’ ”

He also spoke the parable to tie repentance to fruit. We don’t know what happened to the tree, we only know what would have happened if it did not bear fruit.

Repentance was a theme of Jesus’s preaching along with the necessity to believe. The fruit of repentance shows that we have truly believed.

Mark 1:14-15

Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”

What is repentance?

A biblical definition of repentance involves 4 things. To make a change of mind, heart, and action, by turning away from sin and self and returning to God.

What is the Gospel?

It is good to remember that the first four books are started with;

« The Gospel According to ». Each author has a unique perspective of the Gospel as we all do.

1. Matthew presents Jesus as the Jewish Messiah, the fulfillment of Old Testament hopes. Matthew’s central theme is promise and fulfillment: God’s promises in the Hebrew Scriptures to bring salvation to his people Israel and to the whole world are being fulfilled with the coming of Jesus the Messiah. The Church’s response to this joyful news should be to go into all the world and make disciples (followers) of Jesus the Messiah.

The Gospel according to Matthew would have us change our mind, our belief about who Jesus is.

2. Mark portrays him as the suffering Servant who offers himself as a sacrifice for sins. Mark’s gospel is that Jesus is the mighty Messiah and Son of God, who took on the role of a suffering servant whose death and resurrection paid the penalty for our sins and achieved victory over Satan, sin, and death. With this joyful announcement comes the call to all believers for faith and cross-bearing discipleship.

The gospel according to Mark would primarily change our actions and follow Jesus example of servanthood towards others, taking up our Cross and following him.

3. Luke’s gospel is that Jesus is the Son of Man, the Saviour of the World, who brings salvation to all nations and people groups. The gospel is for Lost People Everywhere (think Prodigal Son). God’s end-time salvation has arrived. It is available to all who respond in faith, whatever their past life, social status, or ethnicity.

The gospel according to Luke would primarily have us turn away from our selfishness and sin and return to God as in the Parable of the Lost Son.

4. John portrays Jesus as the Son of God the Father, the Word made flesh, who brings eternal life to all who believe in him. John’s gospel is of the Eternal Son Who Reveals the Father. We can know the Father through the Son, in fact we can become the children of God. John’s portrait of Jesus focuses less on his messiahship and more on his true humanity and true deity.

The gospel according to John says the change that’s needed is a change of heart. We need to be born again. That is a work of the Holy Spirit who brings us into the family of God, where God is our Father.

All four Gospels emphasise the importance of repentance, they just emphasise different aspects of it.

And I’d suggest that’s because at different times in our life we need to apply repentance in a different way.

Sometimes we’ve become too wise in our own eyes, we need to change our belief about who Jesus is and put our trust in Him not in man’s foolish thinking.

Sometimes our lives don’t measure up to our words. We need to square up our actions. We need to put aside our own desires and do what is right by God.

Sometimes we’ve been living our own way and we’ve hit rock bottom. We need to come to our senses, remember our home and return to God.

Sometimes all we need is a change of heart. That is the miraculous work of God alone.

Today the message is from Mark, where Jesus is the suffering servant and repentance is proven by our actions not our words.

You become a Christian when you make Jesus Christ the King or Master of your life.

Mark 8:34-38

When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”

What does it mean, in practical terms, to repent? It means I put Jesus first in these things;

Before my will

Jesus says a person must forget (or deny) self, carry his cross and lose his life. Now the cross was an instrument of death. Jesus tells me that if I am to follow him, I must go through a kind of death experience. I must die to the right to run my own life (which is sin). I am to surrender to the God-given right of Jesus to be my King.

Before my ambitions

People everywhere are trying to “gain the whole world.” To a greater or lesser degree, their aim is to accumulate power, money, popularity, pleasure, prestige, business success, or just keep ahead of the neighbors. Now these things may not be wrong in themselves, but they are sin if they are things we live for above everything else. When Jesus is Number One, these things fall into their right perspective.

Before my popularity

It is not popular to follow Jesus sincerely today. Friends or family members may regard me as strange – some may not want to associate with me any more. But if I’m ashamed of Jesus in this life, then he will reject me on Judgment Day! I must follow Jesus openly. He is not interested in secret disciples. The most obvious way to start doing this is to belong to a church. People who avoid church may claim that it is boring, but often they are just ashamed to be associated openly with Christ and his people. Emphasise that members of the group may have a spouse, relative or friend who disapproves of their faith. But you must put Jesus first (politely) even if it means ridicule.

Mark 9:43-48

If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having two hands, to go to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched— where ‘Their worm does not die And the fire is not quenched.’

And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame, rather than having two feet, to be cast into hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched— where ‘Their worm does not die, And the fire is not quenched.’

And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire— where ‘Their worm does not die And the fire is not quenched.’

Here, Jesus repeats the phrase about Hell 3 times.

Their worm does not die And the fire is not quenched.

Jesus does not literally mean that I am to cut off  body parts. He means that if anything or anyone is stopping me from entering God’s kingdom, then radical surgery may be necessary. Pride is often the cause of this.

Am I too proud to accept salvation as a gift?

Am I too proud to submit to Jesus as King?

Mark 10:29-31

So Jesus answered and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My sake and the gospel’s, who shall not receive a hundredfold now in this time—houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions—and in the age to come, eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”

It may sound hard to follow Jesus, but he makes two promises when we do:

 1.  In this life, he will repay us “a hundred times”

for any cost we suffer.

 2.  In the next life, he will give us eternal life.

Is it worth it?

Jim Elliot, the American missionary killed by tribesmen in South America said of his mission;

"He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose".

This message of repentance may not speak to everyone here today in the same way. As we said earlier, the Gospels speak differently to people in different places in their lives. But if God is speaking to you today asking you to be honest with yourself about what or who is first in your life, and asking you to respond to Jesus message of repentance and putting your faith in him today, then today is the day of your salvation and you need to respond. Not everyone gets a second chance.

Trusting God in Turbulent Times

Print Friendly and PDF

At this week’s Family First staff meeting, one of my colleagues Gordon Clark who is the Pastor at Patumahoe Community Church asked me what I would be preaching on this week. I told him I had been reading Luke 10-12 and with everything that had happened with the US election, I was planning a message on Prayer. His jaw dropped opened and he looked at the sky. “That’s exactly what I’m going to be preaching about this week”.

So before I even had stood up to speak and several of you had already spoken messages about living in turbulent times, sung “Take it to the Lord in Prayer”, brought the Lord’s Prayer into Communion and given an extended reading of the very passage I was about to preach on, it was a confirmation that it is a word from the Lord on prayer. In fact I told you all straight up that I didn’t really needed to preach today because it had already been done.

Nevertheless it is worth speaking the message to prove to you that what the Lord has been saying to all of you, he’s been saying to me as well.

But first of all, who is this?

Last week November 5th was a celebration of Guy Fawkes Day. The event is also known as Bonfire Night. Guy Fawkes Day celebrates the failure of a Catholic plot against the English Protestant government in 1605.

This was after the Reformation that started in 1517 with Martin Luther’s publication of 95 theses causing a breach in the Church as Protestants left the Pope and the Catholic Church because of false doctrine.

88 years later, several Catholics, including Guy Fawkes, plotted to blow up the Houses of Parliament and restore the Pope as the effective leader of England. However, the government found out about the plot before the attack could take place.

The Catholic plotters had intended to assassinate Protestant King James I and his parliament. Celebrating that the king had survived, people lit bonfires around London. Months later, the Observance of 5th November Act 1605 was passed, an annual public day of thanksgiving for the plot's failure.

Within a few decades Gunpowder Treason Day, as it was known, became the predominant English state commemoration. As it carried strong Protestant religious overtones it also became a focus for anti-Catholic sentiment. Puritans delivered sermons regarding the perceived dangers of popery, while during increasingly raucous celebrations common folk burnt effigies of popular hate-figures, such as the Pope.

The timing of the plot to kill the King is very interesting.

One year before the attempt on the King’s life on November 5th 1605, the King James Version of the Bible was commissioned in 1604 and was finally published in 1611.

If the attempt on the King’s life had succeeded, would we have had the King James version of the Bible today?

November 5th, 2024 was US Election Day. We cannot see in the spiritual realm, but it feels like last week, something massive happened that halted the progress of evil in our generation. We shall see over the coming weeks and months how it all unfolds. Though there has been a great victory, the Devil is so mad, we can anticipate his evil empire will want to strike back.

Jesus sent his disciples out in twos to announce the Kingdom of God in advance of Jesus coming to the cities. If a city accepted the message, it would have peace. If a city rejected the message, it would have judgement.

Luke 10:17-24

Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.” And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”

We are living in a time like this where individuals, cities, whole regions, even nations have a choice to make. Will they accept the Kingdom of God or will they reject it. It was incredible to witness the reaction of the Left when Roe v Wade was overturned. The main thrust of the Democratic campaign seemed to be their position on abortion. They framed it as reproductive rights. It was so encouraging to witness America choose life. We are witnessing the dismantling of the Progressive agenda in America which has been fully exposed as Anti Bible, Antichrist.

In that hour Jesus rejoiced in the Spirit and said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and revealed them to babes. Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight. All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him. ” Then He turned to His disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes which see the things you see; for I tell you that many prophets and kings have desired to see what you see, and have not seen it, and to hear what you hear, and have not heard it.”

I read this week some leftist in the Guardian lamenting that more than half of Americans that had voted for Trump were either stupid or evil. They have conducted so much analysis on why they lost the election. Everyone and everything is being blamed, Biden, Harris, Latinos, Coloured, Young men, trad wives, they’ve identified so many reasons, but they just don’t understand why they lost the common man.

When someone rejects God, they go down a dark path where they can no longer see the truth. God has hidden these things from the proud and arrogant, from the worldly wise and revealed it to the weak, the humble, the innocent, the babes of this world. We are really blessed if we can see God’s truth and be joyful like Jesus was joyful when evil is defeated.

What I believe we are witnessing is not political, it is spiritual and the result of the prayers of Christians all around the world.

So many Christians were praying over the US election. As we have witnessed, when Christians pray in unity, it is very powerful. We may be the small rally down the street, but prayer can change the destiny of nations.

Everything Jesus said in the Lord's Prayer is a foundation, a guide for effective prayer. Jesus wasn't giving a magic formula nor giving the details of what to pray in every situation faced. Instead, he sets the foundation blocks like the good builder he is.

The first part of the prayer is about our relationship with God and who He is. Quite often we start off our prayers with what we want forgetting that the most important thing to God is our relationship with Him.

Luke 11:2-4

So He said to them, “When you pray, say:

Our Father in heaven,

Hallowed be Your name.

Your kingdom come.

Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us day by day our daily bread.

And forgive us our sins, For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us.

And do not lead us into temptation,

But deliver us from the evil one.”

Our Father - he's our Dad, he loves us. He's a good Father. He wants us to grow up and be successful in life, in our relationships, in our character. To do our best. to avoid foolishness and evil. He wants us to be wise, strong, beautiful and popular for all the right reasons. He wants us to fulfill our potential, to be healthy, blessed, fulfilled in our dreams but to do more than we could ever dream of. To have a good reputation. To leave behind goodness and a legacy to be proud of. To be courageous and stand up for what's right. To be faithful and true. To be hardworking, to have a strong foundation for the storms of life. To be filled with joy and to always have love. But if we're not on track for all of that we can expect some "correction" from Dad. Because he loves us!

Who is in Heaven - He's the Rock, a strong and mighty tower. A safe refuge. Heaven, that place where there is only peace and beauty and goodness and no evil. He is not susceptible to the troubles of the World, he can see everything clearly and he knows what we are facing, what we should do and where we should go. He is ruling over everything, every evil principality and power and every situation we are in. And he has untold number of angels at his command to protect us and guide us. A NZ citizen can appeal to the Privy Council if they face an injustice, but we are heavenly citizens and we can appeal to the highest Authority there is but more than that, we are the kids of the King!

Hallowed be your Name - Let the mention of your name bring a hush. The demons are afraid of the name of Jesus. May everyone shut their mouths and stand in awe of you. When people look at us, let them be reminded who we represent. Don't let people use your name like a curse word, let them realise who you are.

Your Kingdom come - Your Kingdom come whether we are ready or not. May your power be demonstrated to the World so that nobody can deny you. When your Kingdom comes, people are going to tremble and fall to their knees and on their faces but let it be so! Let the earth shake. Do your healing and miracles so that the people will discover you are real.

Your will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven - Down here people follow all kinds of different rules and philosophies. Some follow a strict religion. Some just live by the "golden rule". Some people do whatever they like as long it doesn't hurt anyone else. Some do what they whatever want and don't care for how it affects everyone else! Some "Just Do It". Some are just looking after No.1. And down here there is one big mess! No-one has it all together, we're all a bit screwed up. But you are the Way, the Truth and the Life. You made us and you know what's best for us. If only we could do what you want and not what we want. Then we would have Heaven and not Hell on Earth.

Then after getting our priorities in prayer straight, we can move on to what we need!

Give us this day our Daily Bread - The Lord's Prayer is for the morning, asking provision for the day ahead. It is looking forward not backwards. This verse has a direct connection to the first temptation Jesus faced in the desert. We trust that God will provide even in the leanest of times because he is Jehovah Jireh. There is also more to life than our physical needs. We don't live by bread alone but by obedience to God's Word, doing his will on Earth as it is in Heaven. Doing God’s will satisfies us.

And forgive us our debts - Only the person who is owed the debt can forgive us. Jesus knew the day we were saved, it wouldn't be the last time we sinned so it's in his prayer! So many debts! Now God is our Father so we're not talking about things particularly. God doesn't give us something for a favour. He gives out of love. But there is a kind of debt in love. A feeling that you need to repay love with love. Because if we just take, take, take the giver can begin to feel they are being taken for granted. Those are the debts we have to God our Father and we can never repay them. Do we realise how much we owe Jesus for what he gave to us? That is our greatest debt.

As we forgive our debtors - The people who owe us something! Those debts we find a bit easier to remember don't we! We gave them something and they never gave it back. Or we did something for them and they never even thanked us for it. They took us for granted. Or they hurt us. Now we're holding a grudge and we don't like them and are angry with them. We need to forgive them that debt. We need to let it go. We can, if we remember that God has forgiven us a much greater debt!

The year of Jubilee was the year all debts were forgiven. It came once every 50 years! And with Jubilee came a promise of a double portion of prosperity and everlasting joy.

We shouldn’t be waiting 50 years to forgive our debtors, we need to keep short accounts.

And do not lead us into temptation - As we saw last week, the Holy Spirit led Jesus into the desert to be tempted by Satan. But Jesus encourages us to pray not to be tempted. Knowing our frailty, that is a very good thing for us to pray! Is there any weakness we have, any place we should avoid so we don't get tempted to do evil? When we are engaged in Spiritual Warfare, one of Satan's key weapons is temptation. Jesus is encouraging us to pray against Satan's weapon, to neutralise it. We need to anticipate when he is going to use it before we are in the heat of a battle!

But deliver us from the Evil One - Not just on a personal level, but our Nation, our World. We are unable to escape on our own from the grip of the Evil One. If we are trapped in our sin, the Lord is able to deliver us, Jesus paid the price for every sin to set us free. If we are in an evil situation through no fault of our own as were the Israelites in slavery in Egypt we can cry out as they did to the Lord to deliver us. He sent Moses and delivered them with many miracles and he can do the same for us through Jesus. We can be delivered from ISIS if we will cry out in prayer!

For yours is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen - it’s his Kingdom, not ours. It’s by his power not our strength for we are very weak. It’s for his glory, not ours.

Speak out the Lord's Prayer and what each line means to you at this moment in your life.

Christianity Explained - Study 4 Part 2

Grace v Works

Last week we reached Study 4 in our series on Christianity Explained. In the first 3 studies, we established the 3 essential foundations to being a true Christian.

The belief that Jesus is the Son of God with all authority including final judgment over us, that his death on the Cross was the only way to forgive our sins and that after 3 days he rose back life, proving he really is the Son of God with authority even over death itself. These are the 3 foundations to the well known scripture

Romans 10:9

that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

Christianity answers the most important question that we can ever ask. What must I do to be saved? How can I be sure that I am going to Heaven? Today we’re going to have a group discussion on what was covered last week on grace over works.

RC Sproul gave us a lecture on justification by faith alone using passages from Genesis and Romans.

Remember, Abraham was counted righteous on the basis of his faith. When God told Abraham that his descendants would number the stars, it says in Genesis 15:6

And he believed in the Lord, and He accounted it to him as righteousness.

If you did Accounting at school you will have heard of double entry. Basically every financial transaction has an equal and opposite entry in the books. RC Sproul was the son of an Accountant and he explained the double entry. On the debit side we have our sin, on the credit side we can either have Christ’s righteousness or our own, there is no possibility to mix the 2.

However, if we try to pay for our sins with our works, we can’t as we can never be good enough, the debt remains. Remember Adam and Eve got kicked out of Eden for just one sin, we commit many sins.

Romans 4:4-8

Now to him who works, the wages are not counted as grace but as debt. But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness, just as David also describes the blessedness of the man to whom God imputes righteousness apart from works: “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, And whose sins are covered; Blessed is the man to whom the Lord shall not impute sin.”

RC Sproul explained the  accounting word impute very well. If we place our trust in Christ and his death on the Cross for our sins, our sins are imputed to Christ who received God’s punishment for sin on the Cross. But there is a double imputation. At the same time, Christ’s righteousness is imputed to us.

Basically, it’s the deal of the century. Only a fool turns it down.

Before we have a group discussion, we’re going to listen to the story of John Newton who wrote the very well known hymn, Amazing Grace which can soften the heart of the hardest sinner. We use this on our very own PCC Logo which is on your sheets of paper.

John Newton Testimony of Amazing Grace

  1. That none should boast
  2. That God would be glorified
  3. That we might have peace with God through Christ
  4. That we might be free from sin
  5. That we might bear fruit
  6. That God’s love might be poured out on us
  7. That we might have eternal life

Group Discussion

1. Luke 18:18-30 Recap of last week - How do you answer the question « what must I do to be saved? »

We must put our faith in Christ and his death on the Cross and believe God’s promise like Abraham did. Rather than trust we are good enough for Heaven.

2. Luke 18:1-8 What was common in the salvation of Ian McCormick and John Newton?

What they had in common was a praying Mum 😊 The scripture emphasises the need to pray for others to be saved.

3. Luke 18:9-14 What was the difference between the Pharisee and the tax collector that led to one being justified?

The Pharisee trusted his own goodness and was unjustified but the Tax Collector asked for God’s mercy and was justified.

4. Luke 18:15-17 What does it mean to receive the kingdom of God as a little child?

To have the faith of a child, to trust in the goodness of God without question like we do our parents when we were very young.

5. Discuss John Bunyan’s chart on the flip side of the paper (adapted by Time Challies).

Note that if you are on the wrong side trusting in your own goodness and heading for Hell, you can repent, receive God's Grace and go on to Heaven ! This is the Good News of the Gospel

Hi, I’m Robert, part of the team at Family First. Thank you for inviting me to speak today.

This is our team, some are instantly recognisable like Bob and Simon, some you may recognise if you watch our regular shows. And others like me, working in the background. A few are part timers. We are just 5.1 full time equivalent. But we do have a voice for Families in New Zealand.

I was born in England in December of 1965, my family emigrated to New Zealand in November of 1974 50 years ago, this year. I became a Christian in May 1977 when I was 11 years old. I went to Papatoetoe High School when Bob was head boy, so I’ve known him most of my life. I was married in 1992 to Mhairi and we have 2 boys, the oldest in London working for Christian Concern the youngest in Tasmania played for the Glenorchy Knights and win the double this season. He’s off to the UK on Tuesday ! I can tell you Bob is a solid character, from a very good family. I’ve known him since our days at good old Papatoetoe High School. That’s him as Head Boy in 1981. His passion was always football, his team, Liverpool.

People see him in the media but they don’t see his private life so much. When we came back from England after 2 years there from 2000-2002, I felt that God told me to get in contact with Bob. He’s been working at Youth For Christ for a number of years and had recently started a church in Papatoetoe though we didn’t know that at the time. Soon after we got back from England, we were at dinner one night and friends of our friends told us they’d been attending Papatoetoe Community Church so we went along, found out Bob was there and soon were involved and are to this day, me as an elder and Mhairi as the administrator. Bob coached our youngest in football for several years and Joshua remains friends with Bob’s son Stephen. Bob

will claim credit for Joshua’s success at football. The reason I share all that is because sometimes it’s good to remember everyone is part of a family, even those we contend with that have completely different world views.

Our former chairmen Ross Wilcox, who stepped down this year aged 84 gave a devotion at our Annual Retreat  from 1 Chronicles which stood out to me. Right after King Saul had died, the elders of Israel anointed David as King in preference to someone from Saul’s household. David had already been chosen by God and anointed by Samuel to succeed Saul so the elders anointing of David was like the official stamp.

There was a transfer of power happening but it could all still come to nothing without the backing of the people.

Israel had been defeated by the Philistines and David had to build the army of Israel again. Jerusalem was occupied, even his home town of Bethlehem was overtaken by a Philistine garrison. The enemy was in control of the country. You can imagine the situation.

As David built his army, no doubt the people had to decide, who they would align with to defeat the Philistines. Their enemy was common but the outcome would be different depending on who they picked. Would they be brave and fight with David or would they remain loyal to the House of Saul which had been defeated by the enemy. David’s position was dangerous, the situation could go either way. His own tribe Judah supported him of course, some from Saul’s tribe of Benjamin but not many. The support from the other tribes was mixed. The tribe of Issachar also had to make a decision whether to get behind David.

1 Chronicles 12:32

of the sons of Issachar who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do, their chiefs were two hundred; and all their brethren were at their command;

It wasn’t the biggest tribe, there isn’t note of any mighty warriors like with the other tribes. But all the leaders, all the brethren it says got behind David. Why? Because they understood the times they were living in. They could see what was at stake was their very long-term existence.

There is a culture war going on today in New Zealand. You are forced to decide who is on the right side of history. And it’s not a straightforward decision. You have church leaders on both sides of the fence. We need wisdom like the men of Issachar to decide which side we will be on.

A strong family gives you a head start in this tough world we live in today. Hopefully your own families are close, some may be gone by now, but they still remain with us in many ways, don’t they? If you don’t have a family to speak of, then the Bible teaches God is our Father and that on the Church you can have many brothers and sisters, so the family is actually much bigger and all over the Globe. A Christian can go to almost any city and the Lord has family there. Certainly, that is true in a country like New Zealand, we are very blessed here.

But we have all seen New Zealand changing before our eyes in the last 20 years and especially in the years since Covid. Many things we have known as New Zealanders growing up have been set aside for this new age we live in. Everything is online now and so fast but for us who remember those old days of face-to-face exchanges, the pre shopping mall days, we feel that human connection being lost. This technology was supposed to make our lives easier and sometimes I feel on top of it, other times it is overwhelming the number of plates we have spinning. People today are looking for an anchor that is found in family but can only ultimately be found in Jesus Christ.

The problem Christians face is that our world view is diametrically opposed to what is generally accepted by the world today.

And the number of people who want to be associated with Christianity is shrinking.

I researched the census results for Paeroa, they are similar to Papatoetoe.

In just 12 years between 2006 and 2018, the number of people who are Christian affiliated shrink from 55% to 35%, a drop of 20%.

At the same time, the people claiming no religion increased by  about 20%. So now you have a majority of people in the town who are atheist or agnostic in their belief about God. That suggests a different strategy is needed to Papatoetoe where the drop in Christians was filled by an increase in Hindus. Atheists have been a tough nut to crack for a long time. But it seems that in very recent times they are softening their stance after realising what everything they had spent their lives tearing down is being replaced with.  Even Richard Dawkins has recently said he likes to think of himself as a cultural Christian, that’s a surprise. Our own Rodney Hide was an atheist all his life but in the last couple of years he was converted to Christ as he became disenchanted with what was being forced on our kids, he came to see that what Bob had been saying all along was right.

The last census in New Zealand was held on 7th March 2023 and the results are being released from 29th May 2024 to August 2025 so keep an eye out for that.

These changes in demographic mean Family First are increasingly engaged in a war in the spiritual sense. We are often under fire for what is called its right wing extremist bigoted position. Particularly regarding;

1. Marriage is between one man and one woman. As a consequence, every child has the right to a mum and a dad.

The LGBTQ community obviously oppose this view.

The theme of this year’s Forum on the Family was “Protecting the Next Generation”.

Family First lost its charity status because of its narrow view on the definition of the family.

2. Family First takes a biblical view of justice

God is very concerned about justice but we must understand the difference between biblical justice and social justice because they are not the same. In fact, they are diametrically opposed.

The key difference between biblical justice and social justice lies in how the two views define injustice. The Bible defines injustice as that which fails to rise to the level of the law of God. Social Justice defines injustice as anything that produces or allows an inequitable outcome.

First and foremost, we see that Biblical Justice is defined by God and God alone. Second, we know that true, final, and perfect justice will ultimately be rendered by God to each person one day. While man-made systems of justice may fail, nothing gets by God. Even though divine justice serves as a comforting backstop, God makes it clear he wants mankind to strive to render true justice, even in this fallen world. Thus, the delivery of the Ten Commandments and the Royal Law will always be relevant. These should serve as the moral baseline for all rightly structured systems of human laws and judicial enforcement.

We can use the Bible to help us discern what is true and good on many controversial topics like

1. Abortion

2. Euthanasia

3. Gay Marriage

4. Transgender rights

and so on. This is what the progressives hate. They don’t want to be tied to God’s law.

Take abortion. We know from the Bible it is wrong to shed innocent blood. Abel’s blood cried from the ground for justice. (Genesis 4:10-11).

Family First opposes woke diversity and inclusion theology. It’s not that we are against individuals or groups because of race or gender. It’s because God has no favourites.

Romans 2:10-11

but glory, honor, and peace to everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For there is no partiality with God.

It is also God’s prerogative on how and when he distributes his justice and grace. In the parable of the prodigal son, the older son was disgruntled that the younger son was not treated justly. But the Father said to the older son that it was just.

Almost all of what Family First does is to protect the most vulnerable in our community.

Have a look at this weeks Pulse Point release. Once you strip it down, you will see it’s about protecting our children and  preserving their innocence. The challenge is enormous but not impossible. Our team is getting bigger and we need your support for the work we do.

Christianity Explained - Study 4 - Grace Over Works

Print Friendly and PDF

Christianity Explained is designed for the person who knows nothing about Jesus or his Gospel.

Papatoetoe has an estimated 2.8% of its population in Church on a Sunday. Could you or I explain to the nearly 98% non-Christians in Papatoetoe (that’s 49 out of 50 people you see in the street) the Gospel of Jesus Christ in a way that helped them to believe that Jesus is the Son of God and gave them reason to change what they do on a Sunday morning? This course will equip you for the task.

We are now at Study 4. In the first 3 studies we established the 3 essential foundations to being a true Christian.

Today we’re going to cover a very important topic  - grace not works !

How can we be sure that we are going to Heaven? This is the very question the rich young lawyer had when he came to Jesus

Matthew 19:16-26

Now behold, one came and said to Him, “Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?”

The question the rich young ruler had was what did he need to DO. As human beings we are taught from a very young age that in order to get something, we must do something first. At home, at school, at work we have it drilled into us that we must work to earn our reward. There’s no such thing as a free lunch. So Jesus tells him exactly what he would need to do to go to Heaven, emphasis on the word do, which is what the rich young ruler wanted to know.

So He said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.” He said to Him, “Which ones?” Jesus said, “ ‘You shall not murder,’ ‘You shall not commit adultery,’ ‘You shall not steal,’ ‘You shall not bear false witness,’ ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ ” The young man said to Him, “All these things I have kept from my youth. What do I still lack?” Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”

The rich young ruler was an exceptional human being. He had lived an exemplary life and had done plenty of good things. A lot of people see themselves as a good person and they think they will go to Heaven because they are good. Jesus gives him one more thing he needed to do. Sell all his possessions, give it all to the poor and come follow Jesus. But this was something that he couldn’t do and Jesus knew it. He could see inside his heart the same way he can see inside my heart and yours. He can see the things that we simply wouldn’t sacrifice. It might not be the same thing for each one of us as it was for the rich young ruler. The point is, he couldn’t do it.

But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions. Then Jesus said to His disciples, “Assuredly, I say to you that it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” When His disciples heard it, they were greatly astonished, saying, “Who then can be saved?” But Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

Jesus wanted his disciples to know that it is impossible to please God by our good deeds but that with God, all things are possible.

There are only 2 religions in the World. The first depends on us, on what we need to DO. The second is Christianity which depends on God alone who grants salvation only because of our faith as Genesis 15 first tells us.

Genesis 15:1-6

After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.” But Abram said, “Lord God, what will You give me, seeing I go childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” Then Abram said, “Look, You have given me no offspring; indeed one born in my house is my heir!” And behold, the word of the Lord came to him, saying, “This one shall not be your heir, but one who will come from your own body shall be your heir.” Then He brought him outside and said, “Look now toward heaven, and count the stars if you are able to number them.” And He said to him, “So shall your descendants be.” And he believed in the Lord, and He accounted it to him for righteousness.

All the other religions teach what we need to DO to go to Heaven.  The Gospel message is  the opposite. It’s grace over Ant works we can do. Today we’re going to let RC Sproul explain that better than I can. RC Sproul is a great teacher, you even get the chalk on blackboard. So apologies if this reminds you of school, get out your pens and paper and take notes because he uses some words you might not have heard before.

For further explanation by the Apostle Paul, read Romans 4:1-25

Christianity Explained - Study 3 - The Resurrection

Print Friendly and PDF

Here we are again at the Crossroads.

In study one we established that the belief that Jesus is the Son of God is one of the 3 essential foundations to being a Christian. Knowing Jesus is the Son of God is life changing;

CS Lewis famously said;

You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse.

In Study 2 we looked at the 2nd foundation to being a Christian, the acceptance of Jesus death on the Cross as necessary for the forgiveness of our sins.

We saw in Mark 15:33-39 that the day Jesus was crucified was not an ordinary day, that there was a supernatural clash of light and darkness, of God and Satan.

Firstly we are told that unusual darkness descended over the land at midday through to the moment he died at 3pm. We know this is unusual because the day of the crucifixion was Passover and that is always on a full moon, so when it says that it was dark from 12pm to 3pm, it shows that it could not have been an eclipse, that the darkness was supernatural and a supernatural act was taking place.

Secondly, this was not the peaceful death scene that Jesus deserved but one of darkness and anguish when Jesus cried out “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?”

But God the Father turned Jesus’s weakest moment into his greatest triumph, laying the foundation stone of the Church.

The Cross became the most recognised symbol of the Christian faith. Every true Church lifts up the Cross as a message to the World.

Jesus’s cry « Why have you forsaken me? » was evidence in fact of Jesus taking our guilt and punishment in his body on the Cross. If we reject Christ’s offering for us, then this will be our cry too.

Thirdly, the Centurion was in awe of all he witnessed that day, the supernatural darkness, the way Jesus died was not like any man he had executed before. He proclaimed in awe and fear « Truly this Man was the Son of God !»

Fourthly, the temple curtain was torn in two. This was also a supernatural event. Only God could have torn the curtain and that was proven by the fact it was torn from the top down.

This shows that Jesus death on the Cross was acceptable to God once and for all. Whereas before, all other people were restricted from coming near to God other than the High Priest,

Now since the temple curtain was torn in two, all believers can enter into God’s presence because of the sacrifice Jesus made which is eternally acceptable to God.

Through Jesus death on the Cross, the Good News is that God and people are restored to friendship.

Jesus has paid the ransom for your soul when he died on the Cross. But you have to want to go free!

If you do not accept what Jesus has done for you and continue on your own way, you will find eventually that way is Death and you will bear your own sins on Judgement  Day.

Now we turn to the 3rd and final leg in our illustration, the Resurrection. Without the resurrection, we just have a good story, just history. But because of the resurrection, we have a living Saviour who can meet our need today and tomorrow and forever. Amen!

An understanding and belief in the resurrection of Jesus is the 3rd of the 3 foundations to being a Christian.

We instinctively know that there must be something more beyond the World we can see. Death is an invader into our World. Mankind has so much sadness because of Death. We are even sad when our pet dies let alone someone we love.

Death itself is nothing,

But this we fear:

To be

We know not what

We know not where

Before I was a Christian, I could not imagine life beyond the veil of Death. All I could see was blackness and this was very scary. But when I became a Christian, I began to see that there is life after Death and find that in fact there is good evidence for it.

Jesus foretold his own death and resurrection on many occasions.

Mark 10:32-34

Now they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was going before them; and they were amazed. And as they followed they were afraid. Then He took the twelve aside again and began to tell them the things that would happen to Him: “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and to the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and deliver Him to the Gentiles; and they will mock Him, and scourge Him, and spit on Him, and kill Him. And the third day He will rise again.”

Mark’s account of the resurrection is the briefest.

Mark 16:1-8

Now when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, that they might come and anoint Him. Very early in the morning, on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen. And they said among themselves, “Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?” But when they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away—for it was very large. And entering the tomb, they saw a young man clothed in a long white robe sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him. But go, tell His disciples—and Peter—that He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him, as He said to you.” So they went out quickly and fled from the tomb, for they trembled and were amazed. And they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

Jesus appeared to his disciples at least 10 times after his resurrection and there were 500 witnesses at one of those times according to 1 Corinthians 15:6 (most probably at his ascension). The evidence for the resurrection is extremely strong and has been a reason that several well known atheists and agnostics converted to Christianity in the last 100 years and penned the following excellent books;

1. Frank Morison - Who Moved the Stone

2. Josh McDowell - Evidence that Demands a Verdict

3. Lee Strobel - The Case for Christ

4. J Warner Wallace - Cold Case Christianity

When each of these men weighed up the facts and the alternative explanations to the resurrection, they came to the conclusion, against their will, that it was beyond reasonable doubt that Jesus was raised from the dead and they became followers of Christ.

I won’t go into detailed explanations today as we have covered these in depth on many Easter Sundays but there are 6 false theories that have been put forward over time and they are all logically dismissed based on the evidence, the main being that the disciples all died for declaring the resurrection was true, except for John who was banished to a prison island.

1. Swoon

Jesus didn’t die but revived in the tomb

2. Hallucination

The people that saw Jesus were hallucinating

3. Impersonation

The person they met wasn’t the real Jesus

4. Spiritual Resurrection

The story is a spiritual illustration not physical truth

5. Wrong Tomb

Jesus’ followers went to the wrong tomb

6. Theft

The disciples stole the body which is what the religious leaders paid the soldiers at the tomb to say as recorded in Matthew 28:13-15

Please see me later if you want a more detailed explanation.

It is important to realise that Jesus was physically resurrected, the disciples could touch him and he could eat. This should give us great hope for our own resurrection one day! Have you ever wondered what the world will be like without you, if you died, and where you would go and what it would be like. Could you answer the question with assurance that you would go to Heaven if you died tonight?

The resurrection gives the believer in Jesus the confidence to know that they will also live on with a body in a physical place with Jesus, that they won’t be a ghost floating through space trapped without a home.

Acts 10:39-41

And we are witnesses of all things which He did both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem, whom they killed by hanging on a tree. Him God raised up on the third day, and showed Him openly, not to all the people, but to witnesses chosen before by God, even to us who ate and drank with Him after He arose from the dead.

Having been witnesses to Jesus’s resurrection restored the disciples hope to something much greater than mere belief. They were transformed and responded with joy to Jesus’s command to go into the World and tell everyone the Good News. Their transformation is a major proof that the resurrection is a fact.

Acts 10:42-43

And He commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify that it is He who was ordained by God to be Judge of the living and the dead. To Him all the prophets witness that, through His name, whoever believes in Him will receive remission of sins.”

This passage tells us 5 things;

1. All people will be raised

v42 refers to the living and the dead. The Bible teaches that all people throughout history will be raised. I once heard of an atheist who hated God so much they asked to be buried in a thick concrete tomb that could never be broken to prove there was no life after death. Within a few years a small plant grew in a crack and split the tomb wide open. Even your cremation won’t stop you being raised from the dead.

2. All people will be judged

There will be justice one day. This sounds good when we think of all the evil people in history. But Jesus said man must give account for every idle word spoken. Many curse and speak hate against God today. But even you and me must one day give an account - on the day of Judgment- to God who gave us life. And we’re honest with ourselves, the pages in our book are full of bad words, bad thoughts, bad actions. Our supposedly clean lives are also polluted with sewer water.

3. The risen Jesus will be the Judge on that Day.

v42 tells us Jesus is the one ordained to judge us. Not Allah but Jesus, the one who many hate today. This is why the resurrection of Jesus is so vital. It not only guarantees our resurrection but also our judgment. It is to Jesus we are accountable !

4. All people will be divided into 2 groups

Sheep

  • Those who believe in Jesus now
  • Are forgiven now
  • Are accepted by Jesus on Judgement Day (Heaven)

Goats

  • Those who reject Jesus now
  • Trust their own goodness
  • Are rejected by Jesus on Judgement Day (Hell)

Many of Jesus’s parables spoke of this division such as the Wheat and the Tares, the Rich man in Hell, the good and worthless fish, the Sheep and the Goats.

5. The division is forever.

The Bible doesn’t speak of a second chance after death. It teaches that it this life, now, is our one and only opportunity. Today is the day of salvation.

We hear a lot of stories today about Near Death Experiences of people who weren’t believers and died, went to a beautiful place where they met Jesus but were told this wasn’t their time and to go back. They return to life and are never afraid of dying after that but they don’t become Christians. We need to be very cautious with stories like that even though they sound convincing. The reason I say that is that they died and came back as unbelievers. If they claim all is well beyond the grave, they are deceived because they died in their sins.

However, if they give a testimony that all was not well beyond the grave for them, then we can consider whether other things they say point to them being truthful. But genuine testimonies like that at rare and thank God for his grace to those people, to the likes of Ian McCormack, the so called Jellyfish man from New Zealand who was stung by a box jellyfish as an unbeliever and died but by the Grace of God was saved.

Next week we will discuss this hard hitting message further. A lot of people reject Jesus because of his message about separating people on Judgment Day. They cannot believe that God would throw someone in Hell just because they would not believe and accept his payment at the Cross for the forgiveness of their sins . They do not believe that they or their unbelieving friends and family are guilty before God and will be judged and go to Hell if they die in their sins. People get angry because of this message, they reject Jesus and the Church because of the offence of the Gospel.

Mark 8:38

For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.

It would not be a surprise to hear a lot of questions from people who hear this message for the first time, so we will discuss and try to answer these this next week.

Christianity Explained - Study 2 - The Cross

Print Friendly and PDF

Here we are again at the Crossroads.

In study one we established that the belief that Jesus is the Son of God is one of the 3 essential foundations to being a Christian. Knowing Jesus is the Son of God is life changing;

1. Jesus’ has great authority as God’s Son. He is the supreme Master in God’s world.

2. Jesus has all authority as a teacher, over sickness, over nature, over evil spirits, over death and to forgive sins which only God can do is a claim that He is divine.

3. Jesus also has authority over you and me and will decide our eternal future. This means we need to come to a decision about him.

CS Lewis famously said;

You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse.

Now we turn to the 2nd leg in our illustration, the Cross. The Cross is at the centre of the Christian faith. An understanding and belief in the power of Christ’s death on the Cross is the 2nd of the 3 foundations to being a Christian.

Let’s read from the Gospel of Mark of Jesus’s final moments at the Cross of Calvary. Mark wants to convey to you how dark this moment was.

Mark 15:22-23

And they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull.

Golgotha & Calvary are the same place. They both mean 'place of the skull', one in Aramaic, the other in Latin. But the word Golgotha conveys the darkness better than Calvary doesn’t it?

Have you ever been to a place that gives you the creeps? They say that Dachau where the Germans murdered the Jews in concentration camps is an eerily cold place.

All the demons in Hell were celebrating the darkest of moments in human history when we crucified the Son of God.

Mark 15:23

Then they gave Him wine mingled with myrrh to drink, but He did not take it.

Myrrh mixed with wine was widely used in many ancient cultures to produce pleasurable feelings and as an anti-inflammatory and painkiller. But Jesus refused the drugs.

Mark 15:24

And when they crucified Him, they divided His garments, casting lots for them to determine what every man should take.

A crucifixion was very shameful as well as torturous. The soldiers removed Jesus’s clothes. All four New Testament gospels record he was stripped of his clothing at the cross. John includes the detail that Jesus was stripped not only of his outer garment but also his undergarment – his chiton, or tunic. Then the soldiers gambled for his clothes in front of him, how the Devil laughed.

Mark 15:25

Now it was the third hour, and they crucified Him

It was 9am in the morning when they crucified Jesus. It was too early for any but a few of his true supporters to know that he had been sentenced to death.

This was not the peaceful death scene that Jesus deserved but one of darkness and anguish.

Mark 15:26

And the inscription of His accusation was written above: THE KING OF THE JEWS.

The Romans mocked the Jews that this is what they had done to their King, their Messiah. They were effectively proclaiming that the Caesar and the gods of Rome were greater than the God of Israel.

Mark 15:27-28

With Him they also crucified two robbers, one on His right and the other on His left. So the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And He was numbered with the transgressors.”

This scripture is taken from Isaiah 53:12

Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, And He shall divide the spoil with the strong, Because He poured out His soul unto death, And He was numbered with the transgressors, And He bore the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors.

Isaiah 53 was written more than 600 years before Christ was born and is called the forbidden chapter. The reason for this is that up until Christ came, the Jewish sages and rabbis agreed that Isaiah 53 was a prophecy about the Messiah. But once the Gospel started to spread, it began to cause problems within Judaism because of the clear resemblance to Jesus as the Messiah. So they say it is about Israel instead or jump from Isaiah 52 to Isaiah 54, skipping Isaiah 53 altogether. Read it for yourself and you be the judge of whom it is about.

Mark 15:29-32

And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself, and come down from the cross!” Likewise the chief priests also, mocking among themselves with the scribes, said, “He saved others; Himself He cannot save. Let the Christ, the King of Israel, descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Even those who were crucified with Him reviled Him.

Mockers say that they will believe if God will do this or that but they are not genuine, they are lying. God will not respond to  a mocker who is essentially hostile in his unbelief and pride, but he always responds to true and humble faith. You’ll hear the mocker when you’re at your weakest, they are cowards. They mock because they think that they are safe to do so.

But God the Father turned Jesus’s weakest moment into his greatest triumph, laying the foundation stone of the Church.

The Cross became the most recognised symbol of the Christian faith. Every true Church lifts up the Cross as a message to the World. PCC does not own this building, if we did we would have the Cross up on the roof so everyone walking by could see it. Instead we have the Cross prominently up on the stage for all to see. The absence of the Cross is also an easy way to spot a false church. The so called church called the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints does not have a Cross on their steeples. Observe carefully, it could save your soul.

I read this week of a UK study on more than 900 new churches established by 11 dioceses in the past 10 years, that none of them used the word "church plant" or "church." Instead they preferred the language of "worship" as their main descriptor for new church projects. Seven of the dioceses used "community," and only two used "congregation," according to the Reverend Dr. Will Foulger. The Church of England appears to be ashamed of the Cross of Christ. In nature, the fruit of a tree can look like an edible kind but be poisonous. So called churches without the Cross are the poisonous variety. Watch out !

Mark’s Gospel tells the story with some very important details for people to understand about the Cross

Mark 15:33-39

Now when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.

The Crucifixion happened at Passover when there was the annual sacrifice made of lambs for the people’s sins as outlined in the law of Moses. This is why John the Baptist called Jesus the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29). But the Passover is always on a full moon, so when it says that it was dark from 12pm to 3pm, it shows that it could not have been an eclipse, that the darkness was supernatural and a supernatural act was taking place.

And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is translated, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

Some people say that Jesus lost faith when he cried « Why have you forsaken me? ». But the cry is evidence of Jesus taking our guilt and punishment in his body on the Cross. If we reject Christ’s offering for us, then this will be our cry too.

VOLTAIRE – Famous French anti-Christian atheist last words were “…I am abandoned by God and man.” He said to his physician, Dr. Fochin: “I will give you half of what I am worth if you will give me six months of life.” When he was told this was impossible, he said, “Then I shall die and go to hell!” His nurse said: “For all the money in Europe I wouldn’t want to see another unbeliever die! All night long he cried for forgiveness.”

Jesus suffered for the sins of you and I so we would not have to suffer in the same way as Voltaire did when we die.

Some of those who stood by, when they heard that, said, “Look, He is calling for Elijah!” Then someone ran and filled a sponge full of sour wine, put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink, saying, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to take Him down.” And Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and breathed His last. Then the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. So when the centurion, who stood opposite Him, saw that He cried out like this and breathed His last, he said, “Truly this Man was the Son of God!”

The Centurion was in awe of all he witnessed that day, the supernatural darkness, the way Jesus died was not like any man he had executed before. A centurion is known for his bravery, for his readiness for battle, but this day shook him.  He said in awe and fear « Truly this Man was the Son of God !»

Meanwhile, at the same time inside the city walls, the temple curtain was torn in two. This was also a supernatural event.

The temple had very tight regulations about who could enter;

1. The Gentiles were not allowed into the temple, they could only go as far as the outside court of the Gentiles

2. Israelite women could go inside the temple as far as the Court of the Women

3. Israelite men could go up the steps and into the Court of the Israelites.

4. Priests could go further into the Court of the Priest and up some more steps into the Holy Place

5. Then once per year, the High Priest with a rope and bell attached went beyond the curtain into the Holy of Holies to make a sacrifice. Only he was allowed to do it. The rope and bell had to be attached because the place was so filled with God’s presence that if he was unclean and died there, they could pull him out with the rope.

But when Jesus died on the Cross, at that moment the temple curtain was torn in two from top to bottom.

Who else but the High Priest would have have dared to tear the curtain. But the curtain was very thick so it wasn’t humanly possible. Only God could have done torn the curtain and that was proven by the fact it was torn from the top down.

This is very significant, because it shows that Jesus death on the

Cross was acceptable to God once and for all and no other High Priest would ever have to make an annual sacrifice ever again.

Since that moment nearly 2000 years ago the Holy of Holies is open to all believers who can enter into God’s presence because of the sacrifice Jesus made which is eternally acceptable to God.

That is why the Bible says about every believer in Christ;

1 Peter 2:9-10

But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.

Through Jesus death on the Cross, the Good News is that God and people are restored to friendship.

Every person born is a captive to their sin, to this World and to the Devil. The Devil is the Strongman who has us captive. We cannot escape his grasp. We cannot free ourselves from sin and the darkness of our coming death in our own strength. Jesus said;

Mark 8:36-37

For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

Jesus has paid the ransom for your soul when he died on the Cross. But you have to want to go free! Stockholm syndrome is a theory that tries to explain why hostages sometimes develop a psychological bond with their captors and don’t try to escape even when they have the chance. But Stockholm syndrome is a delusion, the Devil hates you in truth, but Jesus loves you, that’s why he died on the Cross for you. He paid the ransom for you with his life.

Many people have developed a bond with their captor, the Devil. But Jesus will set you free if you want him to! However, if you do not accept what Jesus has done for you, you are effectively saying to God, « I don’t want anyone to bear my sins - I’ll bear them myself » And so that person remains captive to the Devil and will bear their own sins on Judgement  Day.

You may be at a Crossroads today. You might think that what you’ve done, God can never forgive you for. Jesus’s death on the Cross is very Good News for you. Think about it. Since Jesus is the Son of God and paid the price for your sins, then who can ever question God on that ever again. He has paid the price himself. But the Cross is only Good News if you will accept His offer of the forgiveness of your sins and follow Him. If you continue on your own way, you will find eventually that way is Death.

After the belief that Jesus is the Son of God, the acceptance of Jesus’s death on the Cross as payment for your sins is the 2nd leg on the stool of the 3 legged stool.
